Some experts said that today's postdoctoral fellows need more than ever to develop a broad base of skills beyond the laboratory and apply these skills to the next stage of their careers to maintain maximum competitiveness. When Melissa Ramirez discovered that the Infectious Diseases Fellowship at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta was not suitable for her, she chose other postdoctoral fellowships and learned to file a grant application, mentoring students and teaching skills. Her last stop was postdoctoral teaching at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. There, she was completely immersed in the undergraduate teaching of microbiology and curriculum development.
