[Objective] To investigate the expression of CD44 and CD133 in the tissues of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and to explore the molecular therapy of HNSCC. [Method] The immunohistochemical S-P method was used to detect the CD44 and CD133 in 52 cases of human HNSCC specimens. 8 cases of normal para-cancerous tissue and 10 cases of vocal cord polyps were selected for comparison. [Results] There was no significant difference in the expression of CD44 and CD133 in HN-SCC (P> 0.05), but both were higher than those in paracancerous tissues and polyps (P <0.05). [Conclusion] CD44 and CD133 play a role in the development of squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck. Combined detection of CD44 and CD133 may be helpful for the screening of HNSCC tumor stem cells and for the effective treatment of HNSCC tumor stem cells.
