The physical and chemical properties of natural forests and forest harvesting areas were compared and the effects of deforestation on soil were evaluated. The soil of three soil layers (surface, middle and bottom) of natural forest and adjacent deforested land was collected, and its properties were investigated. Forest soil particle size distribution no significant change. There are significant differences in the bulk density of forest topsoil and middle soil. The pH of topsoil and middle soil, the content of organic matter in topsoil and the available phosphorus in middle soil were significantly higher than those in harvested timberland. There was no change in exchangeable Na + and cation exchange capacity in both forestlands. These results show that the changes of the surface and subsurface soils in the two forestlands are obvious. Forest harvesting reduces soil physical and chemical properties.
