56年来；3号钻机重点试用了钢粒与铁砂混合钻进，在39，86，98，128孔等钻进8—10级坚硬岩层，均提高了效率。根据4月份统计在8—9级火成岩中钻进，单位小时效率达到0.355公尺，比队部定额0.24公尺的小时效率提高48％。以后又进一步的改进钢粒淬火质量，经过多次试验结果，用0.5％的碱的水溶液淬火，比用清水、废油等淬火质量高，将钢粒用小锤打击时，不易打偏或打得粉碎。
