Objective To explore the relationship between mental status and criminal responsibility of schizophrenia patients during forensic psychiatric appraisal. Methods 138 cases of schizophrenia were tested by WAIS-RC and Pearson correlation analysis was conducted with their corresponding criminal responsibility. Results The full scale IQ of schizophrenia patients was ± s = 74.59 ± 14.716; the speech IQ was ± s = 80.89 ± 14.077; the operating IQ was ± s = 70.27 ± 15.427. The statistical analysis showed that there was a significant difference between verbal IQ and operative IQ (F = 26.786, P = 0.000). There was no significant difference between the intelligence results and criminal responsibility (P> 0.05). Conclusions The mean intelligence level of schizophrenia patients is between the normal range and the marginal state and mild impairment. However, there is no correlation between the criminal responsibility and the mental status of forensic psychiatric patients.
