Atrophied Muscles and Empty Artrnby Herbert ReadrnNo doubt it is foolish to imagine that these tendencies can change before 1984.What is more likely is that passive entertainment will fill ever-expanding periods of nonemployment.Bigger and better stadiums will be built to accommodate vaster and vaster crowds of football fans.Cinemas will have disappeared because it requires less effort to view the same kind of programme on the television screen. But driven out by boredom and satiation the younger people will crowd into dives where they can expend their unused energies in dancing like dervishes to the jazz bands.Another form of excitement will find its outlet in betting shops which will have proliferated in every city,in every street.By 1984 gambling will have been nationalised and will be the greatest single source of revenue.
