当年在美国,饶及人被誉为最能融入美国主流社会的年轻亚洲人,1990年,32岁的饶及人就出任美国纽约规划局委员和局长。他没有在中国大陆成长,也没有接受中国式的教育体系,但是他的很多建议均被中国政府采用。饶及人在1991年获得朱镕基总理的接见,朱总理期望他将国外先进的规划理念引进中国,为中国培养一流的规划官员,并适当在中国留下自己的作品。18年来,他陆续承担了中国很多著名的城市规划设计工作,获奖无数,是一位非常了解中国国情的“外国”专家。
In those days, in the United States, Rao and Ren were hailed as the most Asian young people who could best integrate into the mainstream American society. In 1990, Rao, 32, became a member and director of the New York Planning Bureau. He did not grow in mainland China, nor did he accept a Chinese-style education system, but many of his suggestions were adopted by the Chinese government. Rao and others were interviewed by Premier Zhu Rongji in 1991. Premier Zhu hoped that he would introduce advanced planning concepts from abroad into China, train top-ranking planning officials for China and leave his own works appropriately in China. Over the past 18 years, he has successively undertaken many well-known urban planning and design projects in China and won numerous awards. He is a “foreign” expert who knows China’s national conditions well.
