According to the countdown clock on www.sportinglife.com (the number one site for anyone who can read English and understands football!), it is World Cup time again. Despite what the Americans with their risible “World Series” in baseball and self-styled “American football” would have us believe, there is really only one game that matters in the world and that is football. The finest hour is at hand again and all of us have our favourite teams and players that we dream of seeing perform at the very highest level of their skills. There is no doubt that for the real fan the words of Bill Shankley, the great Scottish coach of one of the most successful Liverpool teams ever, are true, for he said: ’Football is more important than life or death’.
