近数十年的军事冲突中,武装斗争的中心大部分都转移到了城市街区,这对坦克装甲车辆的发展产生了深远影响。坦克装甲车辆设计师开始为摩托化步兵分队研制防护水平更高,近似于坦克那样的装甲车辆。其中一种很常见的方法就是将老旧坦克改装成装甲输送车。用于改装重型装甲输送车最常用的是苏联的T-55、T-64坦克和英国的“百人队长”坦克。
