Background: Germination is a crucial step in the successful colonization and dissemination of B. anthracis. There is very little available data on the germination of sprouts in the body, and it is unclear whether the sporulation and host cell interactions are necessary for sprouting to begin to germinate. Methods: In order to investigate the early interactions between Bacillus anthracis spores and skin tissue, spores were seeded in acellular devices in the peritoneal cavity of guinea pigs or in the ears of mice.
