早在太平天国定都南京遣军北伐的时候,安徽省北部颖亳一带的捻军,就群起响应,呼应作战。北伐军失败後,散兵有的加入捻军,因之势力更加强大,杨韦事变後,李秀成和陈玉成对捻军的联系比前较强,李秀成曾招捻军助战,捻军因而接受太平天国的纪律,大受群众欢迎,陈玉成在安徽与清军作战时,又曾得捻军的帮助。因此捻军的首领张洛行於太平天国辛酉十一年曾受天王的“殿前北方统率天军顶天扶朝纲天王”的爵号。同年冬,陈玉成部下的遵王赖文光扶王陈德才等奉命远征西北,明年夏,回师援玉成,又联合捻军,转战陕豫一带,关系更为密切。到了一八六四年春天京危急,陈玉成英勇牺牲後,远征西北的大军,归秀成节制,再度西北征,广招兵马,文光、德才等由陕西回军救援,师未至而天京陷落,此後赖文光部和自江南北上的太平军馀部,由於大局的转变,遂完全与捻军合流,继续了坚强的抗清斗争,使太平天国的正朔,又延续四年之久。

This made the new moon of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom continue for another four years.
