新世纪第一个重大的国际车展于2000年1月9日～23日在美国汽车城-底特律举行。经历了一个世纪的底特律车展今年已是第84届,自其成为国际性车展以来,2000的北美车展已走过11个年头,今年共有561种新型概念车和产品参加展示,而其中的50多款概念车和投产型车更是首次向世人亮相,国际著名的汽车公司,如通用、福特、戴姆勒-克莱斯勒、德国大众、丰田等,纷纷将自己拥有的不同品牌同台亮相,以体现公司全球的整体实力及面对新世纪的信心。 据报道,一年一度的北美车展今年吸引了全球50多家电视台进行现场直播,更有6000多名,来自全球50多个国家的记者进行现场采访。它无疑是国际汽车业在新世纪初的一大盛事。
