康熙皇帝素闻黄宗羲之名,多次召他当官,都被回绝。为表心志,黄宗羲干脆在父亲的墓边自建墓穴,决心以死抗旨。不久,康熙果然又召黄宗羲主持纂修明史。钦差鸣锣开道到了黄家,却只见黄宗羲的儿子黄百家披麻戴孝出来迎接,对钦差道:“家父前日已辞世。”钦差无法,只得回京复旨。待钦差走后,黄宗羲便从墓穴中出来,专心著书立说,一直活到86岁。
