Metonymy and Metaphor reflect an important part of the conceptualization of human beings, events, and world in their daily life. This article will demonstrate this through the lexicalization of two Chinese characters “上” and “在” View. The purpose of this article is to explore the nature of metaphorical extensions (metaphor and metonymy) and how they extend their meaning. By analyzing the data, this article tries to find out the relationship between conversion and metaphor and metonymy, and finds out: (1) the driving force of polysemous words in Chinese vocabulary; (2) two different driving forces - metaphor and Metonymy - Its Role in Archetypes and Grammaticalization.
