Background: The 6-min walking test is useful for assessing changes in functional motor ability, and the accelerometer is thought to provide additional information during the test. The purpose of this study was to determine if the assistance information measured by the My Wellness Key ™ (MWK) accelerometer during the 6-minute treadmill walk test correlates with the current measurement of the outcome. METHODS: Fifteen subjects (9 males and 6 females) completed a 6-minute treadmill walking test during which time the walking pace was adjusted. The cardiopulmonary function tests and the walking distance were performed while wearing the MWK accelerometer. Results: There was a significant correlation between activity count and 6MWD (r = -0.847, p <0.001), but no significant correlation with exercise volume 6 min (r = -0.337, p = 0.220). The energy expenditure of MWK accelerometer estimation was significantly and significantly correlated with walking effort (r = 0.938, p <0.001), but not significant with walk distance (r = 0.477, p = 0.072). The MWK accelerometer did not show results consistent with the gas metabolism analysis (54.35, CI = 46.2-61.4 kcal) and severely underestimated the energy expenditure (36.73, CI = 33.9-39.7 kcal). MWK accelerometer and gas metabolism analysis of low, medium and high intensity physical activity time was no significant difference (p> 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The energy consumption measured by the MWK accelerometer is significantly related to the 6-min walking effort, but the MWK accelerometer underestimated the measured energy expenditure compared with the gas metabolism method. In a 6-minute treadmill walk test, the MWK accelerometer complemented 6MWD data provided by Functional Motor Activity Assessment and 6-minute walk test.
