苎麻宿根年代较长,其生命周期分为幼龄期、壮龄期和老龄期。壮龄期是苎麻产量的最佳时期。一般亩产100—150公斤,高的达200公斤以上。壮龄期的长短各地差异较大。据调查:在一般管理水平下,山区约30—40年,坝区10—20年,以后便逐渐衰老,产量下降。尤其是近年来,一些地方在抓面积发展时放松了管理,使一部分壮龄麻过早衰老、败蔸。因而如何改造衰老、败蔸麻园,提高单产,是当前苎麻生产中的一个重要问题。
