汤南南以“乡愁”作为其艺术思考和文化研究的脉络,是基于中国社会人口结构在快速发展的城市化进程中的问题,最终他选择了“菜市场”作为其文化研究的基地,他发现“城市-乡村”那条无法回归的路,在菜市场内却被鲜活地完成了现代城市人普遍的“乡愁”的对接。为此,汤南南涉猎了图片、绘画、装置和影像、动画等载体,他的一系列作品均围绕乡愁而展开。汤南南最近又转入对内心的挖掘,以大海作为自己的精神故乡,创作了一系列似山如海的大型绘画作品。他的艺术作品有着深厚的人文情怀,是今日中国少有的用心用情用思想面对生活,面对艺术,面对社会的有作为的青年艺术家。
