The eastern Guangdong and southern Fujian region was an important cultural area and system in ancient China, and the periodization of the Shang and Zhou period culture in this region is the foundation and starting point of researching into the early history of this region.Since 2000,excavation in four ancient cemeteries on the Hulinshan,Songbaishan,Niaolunwei and Goutoushan sites in the Jiulongjiang River valley within southern Fujian has revealed 55 Shang and Zhou period tombs, including those belonging to the Fubin culture, and has obtained important stratigraphic evidence from several groups of vestiges and thus provided vital clues for studying the periodization of the Shang and Zhou culture in the Jiulongjiang valley and even in the whole eastern Guangdong and southern Fujian region.Based on a re-examination of the periodization of the four cemeteries proposed in the original report, the present author makes a preliminary study on the evolutionary sequence of the Shang and Zhou period culture so as to lay a relatively reliable chronological foundation for understanding the culture in this temporal and spatial scope.According to a typological study of the typical pottery vessels and taking into account the features of the other pottery artifacts, stone implements and bronze objects, the present paper divides the ancient culture under discussion into seven phases. The first phase is known only from the type of high-necked jar and constitutes the early link belonging to the late Neolithic Age of the present region or the period of transition to the Shang and Zhou Bronze Age.The fifth to seventh phases are represented just by the Fubin culture that has drawn wide attention, and the three-phase division proposed in the present paper establishes a preliminary sequence for understanding this culture’s evolution. The second to fourth phases feature pottery vessels of sandy and then soft clay wares decorated with net,double-line net and incised oblique-line triangular patterns. The commonly seen vessels comprise round-bottomed,concave-bottomed and ring-foot high-necked zun vases, jars, pots and high-stemmed shallow-dished dou containers. These cultural elements occur frequently on important sites in eastern Guangdong and southern Fujian, and mark the cultural stage between the Neolithic Age of this region and the Fubin culture.
The eastern Guangdong and southern Fujian region was an important cultural area and system in ancient China, and the periodization of the Shang and Zhou period culture in this region is the foundation and starting point of researching into the early history of this region. Since 2000, excavation in four ancient cemeteries on the Hulinshan, Songbaishan, Niaolunwei and Goutoushan sites in the Jiulongjiang River valley within southern Fujian has revealed 55 Shang and Zhou period tombs, including those belonging to the Fubin culture, and has obtained important stratigraphic evidence from several groups of vestiges and thus provided vital clues for studying the periodization of the Shang and Zhou culture in the Jiulongjiang valley and even in the whole eastern Guangdong and southern Fujian region. Based on a re-examination of the periodization of the four cemeteries proposed in the original report , the present author makes a preliminary study on the evolutionary sequence of the Shang and Zhou period culture so as to lay a relatively reliable chronological foundation for understanding the culture in this temporal and spatial scope. Accredited to a typological study of the typical pottery vessels and taking into account the features of the other pottery artifacts, stone implements and bronze objects, the present paper divides the ancient culture under discussion into seven phases. the first phase is known only from the type of high-necked jar and constitutes the early link belonging to the late Neolithic Age of the present region or the period of transition to the Shang and Zhou Bronze Age. The fifth to seventh phases are represented just by the Fubin culture that has drawn wide attention, and the three-phase division proposed in the present paper establishment a preliminary sequence for understanding this culture’s evolution. The second to fourth phases feature pottery vessels of sandy and then soft clay wares decorated with net, double-line net and incised oblique-line triangular patterns. The often seen that includes round-bottomed, concave-bottomed and ring-foot high-necked zun vases, jars, pots and high-stemmed shallow-dished dou containers. These cultural elements occur frequently on important sites in eastern Guangdong and southern Fujian, and mark the cultural stage between the Neolithic Age of this region and the Fubin culture.
