Chens and shales (late Sinian to early Cambrian) are found in the western Zhejiang Province and the southern Anhui Province. The chens belong to the Piyuanchun Formation (late Sinian). The shales belong to the Hongtang Formation (early Cambrian). The chens are mainly composed of SiO2, Al2O3. Alkali and Alkaline earth elements are low (e.g. K,O is about 0.32%). The chens and shales have slight different geochemistry characteristic. The source material of chens is different from that of shales in age and composition. Some element ratios, such as Th/Yb, Th/U, La/Th and LaN/YbN. are used to investigate the chens. In this paper the author gives a provenance model for the chens and shales, Which assumes that the shales are affected by a more felsic provenance of post-Archean, the chens are affected by a more mafic provenance of Archean.
