清代对色泽深、质地密、纹理细的紫檀极为推崇,康雍乾三朝是紫檀艺术发展的巅峰期。根据清宫造办处的记载,皇宫中紫檀家具的分量最大,且内檐装饰、小件器物均采用紫檀制作。清代紫檀家具注重华丽装饰以乾隆朝最为典型。乾隆皇帝对紫檀家具的喜好催生出繁复而细致的雕刻工艺,令人叫绝,被称为乾隆工,传统紫檀家具制作不用钉子,采用榫卯结构。宫中的紫檀家具,从打样到反复修改再到最后裁定,都由皇帝亲自审阅。紫檀的“大料”基本都汇聚到了宫廷里面。
