Bagpipe originated in Asia, popular in Europe, because of its long elegant, gentle and deep sound and become the temperament of the Celtic music instrument. While other nations weakened their interest, they were protected and developed in Scotland. They strung together with the Scottish Highland culture and closely integrated into the Scottish life and became the traditional national musical instrument representing the Scots. This paper discusses the Scottish bagpipes in terms of historical origins and development, structure and performance, musical characteristics and development in China, and tries to probe tentatively and comprehensively and prospect its future under the multicultural trend.
