抗战时期图书馆充分发挥了强大的社会职能,为国分忧为民解难,把图书馆事业和人民利益、国家利益紧紧地联系在一起。例如,1935年12月江苏铜山图书馆举行书画赈灾展览,支援过灾区的人民,1936年年底北平图书馆举行为期三天的大规模的航空、水利、无线电赈灾展览,所得门票600余元全部用来帮助江淮受难同胞的给养补助。
