We are about to enter the 21st century. At the turn of this century, the world is undergoing major historical changes. Science and technology are advancing by leaps and bounds, and social change is changing rapidly. The modern science and technology centered on computer networks is the most significant technological breakthrough in human society. It will of course impose new requirements on human qualities. This urges education, including basic education, to face the most profound changes in history: changes in the human knowledge system, changes in the educational environment, and changes in educational needs. In one word, education is facing the challenges of modern science and technology.
