Palm是掌上电脑(Palm PC)这一概念的发端,开无键盘的,掌中可握的‘小’电脑发展之先河。一经问世,广受欢迎,历久不衰。根据美国权威产业情报研究公司IDC最新的1999年调查报告,3Com公司的Palm OS系列产品在掌上型电脑的市场占有率高达72％,远超过Microsoft公司苦苦追赶的Windows CE系列产品市场占有率。如此骄人业绩,决非偶然,主要在于Palm优异的性能和易用性。Palm OS操作系统及其应用程序高效简洁,界面明快,操作方便,很好地满足了人们对掌上电脑在特定环境下的需要。Palm OS独有的Hotsync电脑热同步技术更已获得美国专利。加之Palm OS良好的开放性,使得运行在PlamOS上的应用软件已达6000种以上,可以随心所欲地网上下载。这些程序内容丰富,数量庞大,大大地扩展了Palm的功能和应用范围,使Palm如虎添翼,在市场上的领先地位进一步巩固。目前全世界至少有一千万的用户在使用Palm的系列产品,专门讨论Palm的网址已达数百个,英语更出现了Palmer一词——使用3Com Palm系列掌上电脑的人。
