Susan Sontag used multiple recital voices in her later work “Volcano Lovers.” In contrast to Sontag’s removal of authors’ marks in early novels, the work is especially focused on author-type narrative sounds. The seemingly mundane claims to “me (s)” and “you (s)” refer to the rich connotations of Sontag’s writings. They are not only the exploration of the narrative distance between the author and the reader, but also the examination of the relationship between the author and the created characters, the bridge of communication between history and reality, the author-type narrative voice can cross the space and time, The worldly warning of seeking historical events in the dialogue. At the same time, an omniscient author-type voice, which no one claims to refer to, complements “we” and “you,” and constructs the fictional authority to guide the reader in making the right and wrong judgment.
