我们所谓的“机器人”,在英语里被称为“robot”。事实上这个词本来泛指一切“人造人”,因此在西方科幻小说中“robot”一词除了指钢铁型的机器人(mechanical men)之外,还包括所谓的“生物机器人”等用生化方式“制造”出来的“robot”。而事实上现代科技所研究的机器人,大多属于“自动机”(automaton)一类,它们的智力还远未达到科幻作品中机器人的那种水平。
