Londoners are great readers. They buyvast numbers of newspapers andmagazines and even of books-especiallypaperbacks, which are still comparativelycheap in spite of ever-increasing rises inthe costs of printing. They still continue tobuy‘proper’ books, too, printed on goodpaper and bound between hard covers. There are many streets in Londoncontaining shops which specialize inbook-selling. Perhaps the best known ofthese is Charing Cross Road in the veryheart of London. Here bookshops of allsorts and sizes are to be found, from thecelebrated one which boasts of being‘thebiggest bookshop in the world’ to the tiny,dusty little places which seem to havebeen left over from Dickens’ time.
