John L. Birch, of the Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama, USA, designs and manufactures artificial legs that walk naturally. This prosthetic leg and hip transfer the kinetic energy of the normal leg to the prosthetic leg to help it coordinate with the normal leg. Most people who wear artificial limbs need to lift their hips in order to swing the prosthetic leg slightly forward. Since most prostheses are not as active in the hips and knees as their normal legs, they are more difficult to move forward. And this new prosthetic leg uses a driver to store the kinetic energy of normal leg activity to turn the hip prosthesis as it moves.
