本文运用M.A.K Halliday系统功能语法的三大元功能对帕特里克.亨利的演讲“不自由,毋宁死”进行功能语篇分析。探讨了该演讲如何通过及物性系统、语态系统和归一性系统实现概念功能,如何通过语气系统和情态系统实现人际功能,如何通过主位结构、信息结构和主位推进结构实现语篇功能。从而揭示出该演讲能够成功实现其政治劝说,名留千古的原因。
In this paper, we use the three metafunctions of M.A.K Halliday’s system functional grammar to make a functional discourse analysis of Patrick Henry’s speech, “Not Free, Or Die Death.” How to realize the concept function through the system of physical property, the voice system and the normalization system, how to realize the interpersonal function through the tone system and the modality system, and how to realize the discourse function through the thematic structure, the information structure and the thematic progression structure . Thus revealing the reason why this speech can successfully achieve its political persuasion and its name remains for ever.
