将硬质聚氯乙烯管编排成片井字筏来加固超软土地基,这一方法是日本住宅地基基础研究会(设在佐贺大学理工学部建设工学科内,会长为岩尾雄四郎助教)所研究,被命名为“管筏工程”而应用于实际中。在井字形基础中,过去是采用横摆松木桩的旧办法,而新办法使用具有耐腐蚀性的聚氯乙烯管材,并且由于空心,发挥了重量轻的特长,井字筏排列联结的聚氯乙烯管刚度也大,并且具有分散荷载的作用。
