“蹦极”又名“俯冲跳”,最早起源于南太平洋瓦努阿图群岛中的一个叫彭特科斯特的岛屿。每年春天,岛上都要举行一种宗教仪式,在仪式上,勇敢的小伙子爬上一个高高的木台,把用藤条编成的绳索捆在自己的踝部,然后头朝下跳下来,成功者就会被人们认为有胆量,秋后一定有好收成。1979年,“蹦极”开始在城市出现,当时,牛津大学冒险俱乐部的4名队员,为了效仿彭特科斯特岛人的宗教仪式,他们身穿紧身衣,头戴大礼帽从旧金山的金门桥上跳下来,警方当即逮捕了其中的两人,但是为时已晚,很多人闻风而动,这种新奇独特而又极富挑战性的休闲运动从此就诞生了。
