在喷墨打印机的发展初期,关键技术是控制细微墨滴的喷射精度,提高dpi是一种有效的方式。dpi值的大小代表了打印的品质。随着墨滴的进一步细微,dpi值迅速提高,再加上为喷墨打印机加上的彩色的功能,更多的打印应用被开发出来。对提高喷墨打印机的打印品质的研究方向开始分化,各厂家分别就纸张(打印介质)、墨水、dpi、墨滴调整、色彩调整等着手,提高打印的品质,开发更多的应用领域。Epson公司在彩色打印技术方面也有一套完整的解决方案,那就是PerfectPictureImagingSystem(PPIS,完美成像系统)技术和基于此技术的全线产品。PPIS包括了所有的研究方向,即使是最不起眼的耗材,如:墨水、纸张也纳入了整个解决方案之中。对墨水和纸张的要求一方面是由于进一步提高输出的品质,另一方面也是喷头的革命性的改进对墨水提出了更高的要求。Epson公司的微压电技术使dpi的值提高到1440的业界最高水平。要提高dpi,第一要使喷嘴更细,第二要提高控制的精度。另一方面,Epson的AcuPhotoHalftoning(真彩转换技术)利用照排网版印刷的原理和专利的三维速算表,能迅速准确地将显示屏上的三原色转换成印刷上的四种基本色。由于喷嘴更加细微化,真彩转换技术又能提供更细微的色彩表现层次,特别是比头发丝还细的喷嘴,很容易受到伤害。因而对墨水的品质也提出了更高的要求。
