In response to bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS, endotoxin), endothelial cells are transformed into an activated phenotype, showing proinflammatory and procoagulant properties, including induction of leukocyte adhesion molecules and tissue factor expression. LPS-induced endothelial cell activation requires a soluble monocyte LPS receptor, sCD14. CD14 is a glycosyl-phosphatidylinositol-embedded glycoprotein and a receptor for bacterial LPS that mediates LPS-induced monocyte-phagocyte activation. In this study, a variety of bacterial-induced endothelial cell E-selectin and tissue factor expression were evaluated by sCD14-dependent pathways using cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVE)
