In December 1990, NASA brought a space shuttle with a hardened optical drive into orbit. Engineering design for launch affordability and astronaut safety is a challenge, but the design is not completely different from harsh terrain design. Some of the AOI’s optical drives have been used in deep sea trenches under the Atlantic Ocean. There are still some in the Persian Gulf aircraft used. As with all drives used in our harsh environment, the goal of developing aerospace drives is to develop a system that can be error-free read and write operations under stress. The SEL-2-SAMS spacecraft and SEL-2 standard drives have been used in space. The SEL-2-SAMS driver is compliant
