Collagen is the main protein destroyed during periodontal and periapical disease. One of the mechanisms of destruction is the degradation of the existing collagen by the proteolytic enzyme collagenase. These enzymes include mammalian collagenase and bacterial collagenase, the difference between them is that different sources, different degradation products. Several human tissues tested include collagenase activity in the gums, periodontal ligament, and periodontal pockets, but no collagenase has been reported in periapical tissues.
