佛教于7世纪传入西藏后迅速发展。松赞干布时期,藏族学者吞米桑布札仿照梵文创制了藏文,藏文佛典翻译从此开始。墀德祖赞时译出一些经论,主要是将汉文佛经翻译成藏文。约于779年建成的桑耶寺曾设立译场,翻译出大量的经典。这个建寺地点由莲花生大师勘查选定,墀松德赞主 Buddhism developed rapidly after it was introduced to Tibet in the 7th century. During Songtsan-Gampo period, the Tibetan scholar Swallowsam Buzha created Tibetan in imitation of Sanskrit. The translation of Tibetan Buddhist scriptures began. When Dezu Zansan made a number of translations, he mainly translated Chinese Buddhist scriptures into Tibetan. Samye Monastery, built around 779, has set up a translation venue, translating a large number of classics. The site of this temple was selected by Master Lian Huasheng, and was praised by Song Sang
