侯月线全长253km,是晋煤外运的南部主要通道。线路经过山西省临汾地区的侯马市、曲沃县、翼城县、晋东南地区的沁水县、阳城县、晋城市、河南省新乡地区的济源、沁阳、博爱等县境內。我国黄土根据各地黄土工程地质的特点被划分为7个区域,侯月线位于第Ⅳ和第Ⅴ区。均属非自重湿陷性黄土地区和自重湿陷性黄土地区。在自重湿陷性黄土分布地区。地基湿陷等级一般为Ⅱ、Ⅲ级,对工程建设有一定的危害性,在非自重湿陷性黄土分布地区,对工程建设的危害性较小。所谓非自重湿陷则是在土的自重和外在的附加压力的共同作用下才产生沉陷的黄土。
