蓝宝石的矿物名称是刚玉,也可以说蓝宝石是宝石级的刚玉品种,其化学成分为三氧化二铝(Al_2O_3)。纯净的刚玉晶体是无色的,但由于地质环境的复杂性,天然产出的刚玉晶体或多或少地会混入一些杂质,使其呈现不同的颜色。这些杂质主要是Fe、Ti、V、Cr、Mn、Co、Ni、Cu等过渡金属离子,被称为致色离子,刚玉之所以呈蓝色,归因于Fe、Ti这两种元素。
