海南省海榆中线公路建于1954年,是224国道,也是海南省公路网“三纵四横”主骨架之一。海榆中线公路按当时公路标准五等级标准修建,路基宽7～9米,沥青表处路面;经过46年的营运,现已不能适应交通及社会经济发展的要求。根据省交通厅要求,2000年10月开始对海榆中线公路通什至大本段约22千米进行改造,改造标准为山岭重丘
