Thermoelectric detectors are newer devices that begin to have a considerable impact on infrared technology. They are both the first far infrared detector to work and respond quickly at room temperature, thereby greatly increasing the speed and sensitivity of infrared spectroscopy and radiometry techniques. Recently, thermoelectric detectors for infrared laser systems have been developed. Its impact has just become noticeable. This article starts with a brief introduction of pyroelectric detectors and secondly discusses the importance of these devices in laser measurement applications. According to the following two factors, the use of infrared detectors in field applications is better than that of visible lasers: that is to say, visible lasers encounter eye safety problems, while infrared CO_2 lasers are more efficient.
