金川矿区位于河西走廊北侧,阿拉善地块南缘的龙首山中,主要由震旦亚界及前震旦界组成,有混合岩,云母石英片岩。石英绿泥石片岩,黑云母片麻岩。白云质大理岩及加里东期,海西期花岗岩、斜长角闪岩脉及超基性岩体(辉橄岩、橄榄岩)。龙首山为一复式向斜。褶皱轴走向北50°西,大体属加里东期。超基性岩体也倾向南西,缺失下古生界,上古生界分布于龙首山南坡。缺失三迭系、侏罗系及白垩系,主要分布于龙首山西端及矿区内,新生界分布于金川河谷及山间低凹地带。根据钻探资料,在龙首山北侧第四系已钻过900余米。

Ultramafic rocks are also inclined to the southwest, missing the Lower Paleozoic, Upper Paleozoic distributed in the southern slope of Longshe Mountain. The Triassic series, Jurassic series and Cretaceous series are missing. They are mainly distributed in the western end of Longsishou Mountain and the mining area. The Cenozoic areas are distributed in the Jinchuan Valley and the mountainous depression. According to the drilling data, more than 900 meters have been drilled in the Quaternary of the north of Longshenshan.
