INTRODUCTION Concern over the destruction of buildings in the New York City area has been the focus of attention for nearly 10 years on earthquakes (both near and far). According to the recent estimates of national seismicity, the national seismic code calls for an increase of the strength and resilience of buildings in downtown New York. A pilot design project to compare the cost-effective design of today’s New York City’s wind-resistant design with the seismic design of seven buildings set forth in the national seismic code was completed in 1983-84.
