Using a stratified cluster sampling method, 3458 middle school students and 65 teachers in Yunnan Province were surveyed. The results show that: 1. The answer rate of basic knowledge about AIDS among middle school students was 22.0% to 66.8%, and the scores of AIDS and related knowledge increased with grades; the average score of boys was higher than that of girls; the average score of urban students was higher than that of rural students. 2. Students do not have enough knowledge to protect themselves from AIDS. Only 37.7% of students believe that they know how to avoid HIV and AIDS; there is a general fear of AIDS among students and discrimination against AIDS patients. 10.1% of the students indicated that they would like to study in the same class as the students suffering from AIDS or HIV. 3. Secondary school teachers in Yunnan Province have a more comprehensive understanding of HIV transmission routes, but they still lack understanding of general knowledge of AIDS and should be the focus of teachers’ health education and training in the future. 4. Teachers’ awareness of self-protection is strong. They are more comprehensive than students and do not blindly fear AIDS. 72.3% of teachers think they know how to avoid AIDS or HIV, but only 29.2% of teachers indicated that they are willing to teach. HIV-infected students stated that teachers also have a serious discrimination attitude toward AIDS patients and people living with HIV and need to be promptly corrected. 5. The vast majority of teachers (92.3%) agree and support the development of health education for AIDS prevention among middle school students, and use the combination of other health education as the best method for the prevention of health education in AIDS schools.
