This article describes a new polarization-sensitive OTDR method that is well suited for quantitatively measuring the cumulative PMD of installed fiber links (which can include many different single-mode fiber types). In this way it is possible to determine the higher fiber area of the PMD and to replace the area fiber if necessary in order to reduce the link PMD in a cost-effective way.
