DEC plans to develop two long-term projects to broaden the bandwidth of enterprise servers and extend Open VMS system clustering capabilities. The first is to develop a new server, code-named Wildfire, which will deploy 32 DEC’s forthcoming 500MHz 64-bit 21264 CPUs to handle data warehousing, transactions and Internet applications. It is expected that it will include a high-bandwidth system bus for a new DEC Tsunami Alpha chip. In the meantime, DEC is developing a scalable OpenVMS clustering technology called the Galaxies Software Architecture. This technology enables clustering of up to 200 Alpha CPUs per server and up to 200 I / O devices. Both of DEC’s products are scheduled to be released within the next 18 months.
