In an era of complex, rapidly changing times, nowadays, innovators who are ignorant of the environment will fall into danger. This year’s best-of-breed business class book helps to mitigate this risk by analyzing the environment from three different but complementary perspectives. Twenty-five years ago, I worked for a senior team building the space shuttle’s main engine, when I saw a colleague struggling to introduce a new technology. He is responsible for developing a laser welding technology to replace the overly complicated electron beam technology, which is the loss of millions of dollars worth of components. But as the shop floor workers opposed this technological change, the result of his possibly better approach was discarded. That is the first time I saw the innovation work failed due to the environment, I will never forget. 114
