Irrigation water is a potential source of hydropower but has so far not been fully exploited. At present, many irrigation districts in the United States have installed turbines in irrigation canals to generate electricity during the irrigation season or the water supply season. The main challenge in designing such a turbine is that the irrigation water supply provides only a low head, so that to make effective use of this hydraulic resource, special turbines must be designed. Axel Johnson Engineering currently manufactures and installs turbines that generate electricity using irrigation and water supplies. These turbines are paddle or semi-paddle-type turbines.
