生育年龄妇女就是指有月经的妇女,在妇女的一生中大概有35年左右的时间。因为每月有月经血液丢失,所以铁的需要就比相同年龄的男子为多。也就是说,生育年龄妇女的铁营养比成年男子更为重要。如果不注意就容易发生缺铁性贫血,从而影响生育年龄妇女的健康和劳动能力。铁是制造血红蛋白的主要原料。血红蛋白是红血球内主要功能物质,担负着身体内氧的运输和代谢功能。血红蛋白铁占全身总铁量的70%以上。一个正常成年人每天都要由表面皮肤和消化道上皮细胞以及汗液和尿液中丢失一定量的铁,这个丢失的铁量称之为基本铁丟失量。成年男子大概每天的铁丟失量为1毫克,妇女每天的铁的基本丢失量大概为0.8—0.9毫克,实际上这就是每天铁的需要量。生育年龄妇女铁营养的重要性是通过科学研究来证明的。第一个调查研究材料是生育年龄妇女的月经
