同浓缩饲料比,新鲜牧草不仅含有更为廉价的蛋白质、粗纤维、维生素和矿物质,而且单位面积产量高。以苜蓿为例,其单位面积的蛋白质产量比大豆还高4~6倍。但是,新鲜牧草只能为牛、羊等反刍动物食用,而且一年之中只能供几个月,从深秋到早春只得饲喂青贮料或干草,其营养价值将有损失,特别是自然晾晒干草时,遇雨损失更严重,而人工干燥又要耗费燃料。因此,近年来日本对湿法处理牧草进行了研究,已有一套成套设备在北海道投入试生产。
