Background Twins are at greater risk for developing cerebral palsy (CP), while the incidence of twins in the United States and around the world is on the rise, and this article aims to reveal the association between twins and cerebral palsy. METHODS: Of the 155,572 children born in 1983-85 in four districts of northern California, subjects with congenital CP who were diagnosed as having moderate or severe congenital CP and who survived until age 3 were enrolled in the study. Incidence and some of the CP-related risk factors to investigate. Results Of the 2985 twin fetuses, 20 of 18 were CP. The incidence of CP was 6.7 per 1,000 live births (95% CI 4.2 to 11); 12/1000 twin pregnancies (95% CI 7.2-19); and 1.1 / 1000 single fetuses 95% CI 0.97 ~ 1.3). 10% of all CP children were twins and 22% of twins were born with CPs weighing <1500g. Twins comprise the vast majority of very low birth weight infants (VLBW), but their risk of developing CP is comparable to that of VLBW single fetuses. Birth weight ≥ 2500g twins
